Specific code 2015 ICD-9-CM Diagnosis Code 428.0
Congestive heart failure, unspecified
  • 2015
  • Billable Thru Sept 30/2015
  • Non-Billable On/After Oct 1/2015

  • ICD-9-CM 428.0 is a billable medical code that can be used to indicate a diagnosis on a reimbursement claim, however, 428.0 should only be used for claims with a date of service on or before September 30, 2015. For claims with a date of service on or after October 1, 2015, use an equivalent ICD-10-CM code (or codes).
Convert to ICD-10-CM: 428.0 converts approximately to:

Clinical Information
  • 1. Inadequacy of the heart so that as a pump it fails to maintain the circulation of blood, with the result that congestion and edema develop in the tissues; see also forward heart failure, backward heart failure, right ventricular failure, left ventricular failure. Syn cardiac failure, cardiac insufficiency, congestive heart failure, myocardial insufficiency. 2. Resulting clinical syndromes including shortness of breath, pitting edema, enlarged tender liver, engorged neck veins, and pulmonary rales in various combinations
  • Complication of heart diseases; defective cardiac filling and/or impaired contraction and emptying, resulting in the heart's inability to pump a sufficient amount of blood to meet the needs of the body tissues or to be able to do so only with an elevated filling pressure
  • Failure of proper functioning of the right ventricle, with venous engorgement, hepatic enlargement, and subcutaneous edema
  • Weakness of the heart muscle that leads to a buildup of fluid in body tissues

ICD-9-CM codes are used in medical billing and coding to describe diseases, injuries, symptoms and conditions. ICD-9-CM 428.0 is one of thousands of ICD-9-CM codes used in healthcare. Although ICD-9-CM and CPT codes are largely numeric, they differ in that CPT codes describe medical procedures and services. Can't find a code?
