Cushing's syndrome
  • 2015
  • Billable Thru Sept 30/2015
  • Non-Billable On/After Oct 1/2015

  • ICD-9-CM 255.0 is a billable medical code that can be used to indicate a diagnosis on a reimbursement claim, however, 255.0 should only be used for claims with a date of service on or before September 30, 2015. For claims with a date of service on or after October 1, 2015, use an equivalent ICD-10-CM code (or codes).

Clinical Information
  • A syndrome characterized by abnormal secretion of adrenocorticotrophic hormone in conjunction with neoplastic growth occurring anywhere in the body. The most common associations are tumors of the bronchus (oat cell or carcinoid), thymic tumors (epithelial or carcinoid), and pancreatic endocrine tumor. (devita et al. Cancer, p 1364. 4th edition. Lippincott)
  • Abnormally increased secretion of adrenal hormones
  • Complex of symptoms and signs due to excessive production or administration of hydrocortisone or its semi-synthetic analogs
  • Condition, more commonly seen in females, due to hyperadrenocorticism resulting from neoplasms of the adrenal cortex or the anterior lobe of the pituitary, or to prolonged excessive intake of glucocorticoids for therapeutic purposes; symptoms and signs may include rapidly developing adiposity of the face, neck, and trunk, kyphosis caused by osteoporosis of the spine, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, amenorrhea, hypertrichosis in females, impotence in males, dusky complexion with purple markings, polycythemia, pain in the abdomen and back, and muscular wasting and weakness
255.0 Excludes
  • congenital adrenal hyperplasia (255.2)
Applies To
  • Adrenal hyperplasia due to excess ACTH
  • Cushing's syndrome:
    • NOS
    • iatrogenic
    • idiopathic
    • pituitary-dependent
  • Ectopic ACTH syndrome
  • Iatrogenic syndrome of excess cortisol
  • Overproduction of cortisol
Use Additional
  • Use additional E code to identify cause, if drug-induced

ICD-9-CM codes are used in medical billing and coding to describe diseases, injuries, symptoms and conditions. ICD-9-CM 255.0 is one of thousands of ICD-9-CM codes used in healthcare. Although ICD-9-CM and CPT codes are largely numeric, they differ in that CPT codes describe medical procedures and services. Can't find a code?
