2008 ICD-9-CM Diagnosis 239

Neoplasms of unspecified nature

On October 1, 2008 the 2009 ICD-9-CM codes came into effect. Therefore, this code may be out of date.

The 2009 version of ICD-9-CM 239 can be accessed here.

  • (NEE-o-PLAY-zha) Abnormal and uncontrolled cell growth.
  • (TOO-mer) An abnormal mass of tissue that results from excessive cell division. Tumors perform no useful body function. They may be benign (not cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
  • A new growth of benign or malignant tissue.
  • An abnormal tissue growth resulted from uncontrolled cell proliferation. Benign neoplastic cells resemble normal cells without exhibiting significant cytologic atypia, while malignant ones exhibit overt signs such as dysplastic features, atypical mitotic figures, necrosis, nuclear pleomorphism, and anaplasia. Representative examples of benign neoplasms include papillomas, cystadenomas, and lipomas; malignant neoplasms include carcinomas, sarcomas, lymphomas, and leukemias. -- 2004
  • New abnormal growth of tissue. Malignant neoplasms show a greater degree of anaplasia and have the properties of invasion and metastasis, compared to benign neoplasms.
  • 239 is a non-specific code that cannot be used to specify a diagnosis
