  • A quickly progressing disease in which too many immature white blood cells called lymphoblasts are found in the blood and bone marrow.
  • Leukemia with an acute onset, characterized by the presence of lymphoblasts or Burkitt cells in the bone marrow and the peripheral blood. It includes the precursor B lymphoblastic leukemia, precursor T lymphoblastic leukemia, and Burkitt's leukemia.
  • Lymphocytic leukemia where cells show little differentiation. There are three major subgroups (FAB L1, L2, & L3) based on distinguishing characteristics of the blast cells. Adult and childhood forms of the disease show biological differences as well.
