ICD-9-CM Diagnosis 331

Other cerebral degenerations

  • 331 is a non-specific code that cannot be used to specify a diagnosis

ICD-9-CM Diagnosis 331.0

Alzheimer's disease

  • A degenerative disease of the BRAIN characterized by the insidious onset of DEMENTIA. Impairment of MEMORY, judgment, attention span, and problem solving skills are followed by severe APRAXIAS and a global loss of cognitive abilities. The condition primarily occurs after age 60, and is marked pathologically by severe cortical atrophy and the triad of SENILE PLAQUES; NEUROFIBRILLARY TANGLES; and NEUROPIL THREADS. (From Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, pp1049-57)
  • A disabling degenerative disease of the nervous system occurring in middle-aged or older persons and characterized by dementia and failure of memory for recent events, followed by total incapacitation and death. Types of the Alzheimer syndrome are differentiated by the age of onset and genetic characteristics. The early onset form (the mean age of the onset of symptoms between the ages of 40 and 60 years) and the late onset form (the onset of symptoms after the age of 60 years). Three forms are identified: AD-1, AD-2, AD-3. Some of the clinical characteristics of the Alzheimer syndrome are similar to those of the Pick syndrome.
  • A progressive, neurodegenerative disease characterized by loss of function and death of nerve cells in several areas of the brain leading to loss of cognitive function such as memory and language.
  • 331.0 is a specific code that can be used to specify a diagnosis
  • 331.0 contains 8 index entries

ICD-9-CM Diagnosis 331.1

Pick's disease

  • 331.1 is a non-specific code that cannot be used to specify a diagnosis

ICD-9-CM Diagnosis 331.11

Pick's disease

  • A rare form of DEMENTIA that is sometimes familial. Clinical features include APHASIA; APRAXIA; CONFUSION; ANOMIA; memory loss; and personality deterioration. This pattern is consistent with the pathologic findings of circumscribed atrophy of the poles of the FRONTAL LOBE and TEMPORAL LOBE. Neuronal loss is maximal in the HIPPOCAMPUS, entorhinal cortex, and AMYGDALA. Some ballooned cortical neurons contain argentophylic (Pick) bodies. (From Brain Pathol 1998 Apr;8(2):339-54; Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, pp1057-9)
  • 331.11 is a specific code that can be used to specify a diagnosis
  • 331.11 contains 6 index entries

ICD-9-CM Diagnosis 331.19

Other frontotemporal dementia

  • 331.19 is a specific code that can be used to specify a diagnosis
  • 331.19 contains 2 index entries

ICD-9-CM Diagnosis 331.2

Senile degeneration of brain

  • 331.2 is a specific code that can be used to specify a diagnosis
  • 331.2 contains 6 index entries

ICD-9-CM Diagnosis 331.3

Communicating hydrocephalus

  • 331.3 is a specific code that can be used to specify a diagnosis

  • 331.7 contains 8 index entries

ICD-9-CM Diagnosis 331.8

Other cerebral degeneration

  • 331.8 is a non-specific code that cannot be used to specify a diagnosis

ICD-9-CM Diagnosis 331.81

Reye's syndrome

  • A form of encephalopathy with fatty infiltration of the LIVER, characterized by brain EDEMA and VOMITING that may rapidly progress to SEIZURES; COMA; and DEATH. It is caused by a generalized loss of mitochondrial function leading to disturbances in fatty acid and CARNITINE metabolism.
  • 331.81 is a specific code that can be used to specify a diagnosis
  • 331.81 contains 2 index entries

ICD-9-CM Diagnosis 331.82

Dementia with lewy bodies

  • A neurodegenerative disease characterized by dementia, mild parkinsonism, and fluctuations in attention and alertness. The neuropsychiatric manifestations tend to precede the onset of bradykinesia, MUSCLE RIGIDITY, and other extrapyramidal signs. DELUSIONS and visual HALLUCINATIONS are relatively frequent in this condition. Histologic examination reveals LEWY BODIES in the CEREBRAL CORTEX and BRAIN STEM. SENILE PLAQUES and other pathologic features characteristic of ALZHEIMER DISEASE may also be present. (From Neurology 1997;48:376-380; Neurology 1996;47:1113-1124)
