Dagnostic ultrasound
- (UL-tra-son-OG-ra-fee) A procedure in which sound waves (called ultrasound) are bounced off tissues and the echoes produce a picture (sonogram).
- A technique in which high-frequency sound waves are bounced off internal organs and the echo pattern is converted into a 2 dimensional picture of the structures beneath the transducer. (On-line Medical Dictionary)
- The visualization of deep structures of the body by recording the reflections of echoes of pulses of ultrasonic waves directed into the tissues. Use of ultrasound for imaging or diagnostic purposes employs frequencies ranging from 1.6 to 10 megahertz.
