  • Acute inflammation of the intestine associated with infectious DIARRHEA of various etiologies, generally acquired by eating contaminated food containing TOXINS derived from BACTERIA, PROTOZOA, or other microorganisms. Dysentery is characterized initially by watery FECES then by bloody mucoid stools. It is often associated with ABDOMINAL PAIN; FEVER; and DEHYDRATION.
  • An acute or chronic inflammation of the colon caused by viruses (e.g. cytomegalovirus), bacteria (e.g. ameba) or immunologic factors (inflammatory bowel disease which includes Crohn's colitis and ulcerative colitis). -- 2004
  • INFLAMMATION of any segment of the GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT from ESOPHAGUS to RECTUM. Causes of gastroenteritis are many including genetic, infection, HYPERSENSITIVITY, drug effects, and CANCER.
  • Inflammation of any segment of the SMALL INTESTINE.
  • Inflammation of the COLON section of the large intestine (INTESTINE, LARGE), usually with symptoms such as DIARRHEA (often with blood and mucus), ABDOMINAL PAIN, and FEVER.
