ICD-9-CM Diagnosis 530.5

Dyskinesia of esophagus

  • Disorders affecting the motor function of the UPPER ESOPHAGEAL SPHINCTER; LOWER ESOPHAGEAL SPHINCTER; the ESOPHAGUS body, or a combination of these parts. The failure of the sphincters to maintain a tonic pressure may result in gastric reflux of food and acid into the esophagus (GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX). Other disorders include hypermotility (spastic disorders) and markedly increased amplitude in contraction (nutcracker esophagus).
  • A hypermotility disorder of the ESOPHAGUS that is characterized by spastic non-peristaltic responses to SWALLOWING; CHEST PAIN; and DYSPHAGIA.
  • 530.5 is a specific code that can be used to specify a diagnosis

ICD-9-CM Diagnosis 530.7

Gastroesophageal laceration-hemorrhage syndrome

  • A condition characterized by mucosal tears at the ESOPHAGOGASTRIC JUNCTION, sometimes with HEMATEMESIS. Typically it is caused by forceful bouts of retching or VOMITING.
  • 530.7 is a specific code that can be used to specify a diagnosis

  • (GAS-tro-eh-sof-a-JEE-al REE-flux diz-EEZ) Also called GERD. A common disorder marked by frequent or severe heartburn. The burning feeling occurs when stomach acid flows up into the esophagus.
  • Retrograde flow of gastric juice (GASTRIC ACID) and/or duodenal contents (BILE ACIDS; PANCREATIC JUICE) into the distal ESOPHAGUS, commonly due to incompetence of the LOWER ESOPHAGEAL SPHINCTER. Gastric regurgitation is an extension of this process with retrograde flow into the PHARYNX or MOUTH.

Barrett's esophagus

  • A condition with damage to the lining of the lower ESOPHAGUS resulting from chronic acid reflux (ESOPHAGITIS, REFLUX). Through the process of metaplasia, the squamous cells are replaced by a columnar epithelium with cells resembling those of the INTESTINE or the salmon-pink mucosa of the STOMACH. Barrett's columnar epithelium is a marker for severe reflux and precursor to ADENOCARCINOMA of the esophagus.
  • Esophageal segment lined with columnar metaplastic epithelium which is flat or villiform. Barrett's epithelium is characterized by two different types of cells: goblet cells and columnar cells. The symptomatology of Barrett's esophagus is that of gastro-esophageal reflux. It is the precursor of most esophageal adenocarcinomas. (WHO, 2000) -- 2003
  • A condition in which the cells lining the lower part of the esophagus have changed or been replaced with abnormal cells that could lead to cancer of the esophagus. The backing up of stomach contents (reflux) may irritate the esophagus and, over time, cause Barrett's esophagus.
